Honesdale Students Win Awards on the National Latin Exam
On March 14, 2025 (a month earlier than last year’s test) eighteen Honesdale High School students in the Latin program participated in the National Latin Exam. The students took exams on four different levels depending on their level of study, and a great majority were very successful on the test. Of the 18 students who took the exam, 16 scored above the national average and received awards. Five students received the Gold, Summa Cum Laude award, and six received the Silver Maxima Cum Laude award. Three received the Magna Cum Laude, and two received the Cum Laude award. (In Latin Cum Laude means with praise. Summa means the highest. Maxima means very great, and magna means great.)
In Latin I the Eli Carmody won the gold medal with a score of 38 out of 40. In Latin II, there were four gold and one silver medal. The gold medal winners were Kristoff Bundik, Luca Giordano, Abby Carrick, and Mia Wolfe. Autumn Razny won a silver medal, and Kati Legg received the Magna cum laude award. In Latin IV Liam Miller and Eoman Judge each received a silver medal, while Trysten Evanitsky received a cum laude award.
As the name suggests, the National Latin Exam is a test given annually to Latin students across the United States and around the world. The NLE is not meant to be a competition but rather an opportunity for students to receive reinforcement and recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom. Depending upon their score, students may earn certificates, medals, and may even qualify for scholarships. The basic purposes of the NLE are to promote the study of Latin and to encourage the individual student.
